Giving Back: Male Primary School in Nehri, Kenya

Follow the Kenya Trip from Oct. 14 – Nov. 15, 2008 online!

Last Christmas Group2 decided that rather than sending the usual Christmas baskets as gifts to our clients, we should do something more valuable and give back to the global community. As a result, Group2 donated a total of $12,000 (CAD), to build a school in Nehri, Kenya: the Male Primary School (pronounced Mahlay). Since that decision, we have received positive feedback from our clients, sub-consultants and staff. The Lacombe based non-profit organization we are working through is A Better World. They coordinate the work that goes into the school selection and building process (for more information, check the Giving Back tab). Over the past year, A Better World has worked with Group2 to ensure our donation is being allocated to the proper sources and as a result “our” school will hold its grand opening this month!

Group2 principal Pat Romerman along with some of his family members will be attending the school’s grand opening on October 29. Pat will also be surveying a foot bridge that needs work in another village.

We are posting the highlights of their journey on our news page. You are welcome to follow the trip progress online by following Eric Rajah’s travel blog from A Better World.

Highlights of Pat’s trip from the weekend (Oct. 25/26):

A visit to Ian Castleman Orphanage. This is where Pat is needed to develop a site plan for proper structure.

Pat met with Ian and his daughter Paula and her husband Ashley. Paula and Ashley work hard in Australia to raise funds and do all the accounting for the orphanage. Here Pat is doing a sketch of the buildings on site

By the end of Satuday Eric and Pat visited St. Ann Baby Home. Anyone – even an engineer can be used to feed kids when there are so many.

After feeding a little time to play – 20 babies need a lot of attention.
